If you deconstruct a Greece, you are left with a collage of random images... The visual outcome is phenomenally unparalleled as images lie next to or on top of each other, thus creating multiple layers of unrelated stories. However, when does a symbol begin to exist within them, and how flexible is its significance and meaning ?
If a national identity is born with, and through symbols, it is with them that it also dies. How clear does an image need to be so we can recognize the face, and how blurred to recognize its symbolism? Through the constant bombardment of images and information it is impossible to not get lost. Our language doesn’t have enough words for our passions while everyone chants their silent tragedy. Our national anthem echoes as a patchwork of heterogeneous elements, composed by micro-liturgies, traditional galas and football anthems. A type of banal nationalism lies next to sushi bars and late night fast food canteens. While waiting for the new and trite ethnic narratives of our identity, the language that will abstract them is being written…”
